Dismal England and the World Cup
English fans can be forgiven for always expecting too much from their national football team. Many an English fan will readily equate the present England team with the Italian team who won the last World Cup. Who knows, with a better manager this immensely talented England team may have made some headlines. However, the spirit was missing and the lads never got stuck into the opposition.
No doubt competition was stiff and many teams could easily have defeated the England team. But not trying and not giving your one hundred percent hurts more than any stinging defeat. Caution seemed to have got the better of every England footballer, and the side always seemed hell bent on trying to steal a goal and then defend that lead.
There are better ways of performing at a grand stage such as the World Cup. Rooney never seemed to get the support from the fabulous duo of Lampard and Gerrard, and tactics seemed to have been driving the footballers rather than a will to win. Sticking to the plans that had been practiced before the tournament began undid the England football team.
An isolated Rooney was more ineffective than any centre forward in the entire tournament, and he cut a forlorn figure throughout the tournament.
Sven’s replacement did even worse, and England later failed to qualify for the European Cup. Now it is Italy’s team who are the great football champions. When is England football going to climb to the top?
