Get To Know: Arsenal

Arsenal is known by many as one of the most successful football clubs in English history. They're one of the “Big Four” as well as one of the most recognizable football clubs in the world. What is the story behind the trophies? What's the ammunition stocking those Gunners? The legacy began in Woolwich under the name Dial Square and was a rather rocky and uneventful beginning. The club was formed by workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich in 1886. Seven years after its formation, it joined the Football League's Second Division in 1893 under the name Woolwich Arsenal. The team wasn't promoted to First Division for another 11 years and it struggled financially due to a lack of attendance as a result of the club’s location in Woolwich. The team declared bankruptcy in 1910 and by 1913 had been relegated back to Second Division. New owner Henry Norris decided to move the club to a more populated and, thus, profitable location that same year. The club moved to Arsenal Stadium in Highbury, North London and changed its name again to simply Arsenal. A heated rivalry began between Arsenal and neighbouring club Tottenham Hotspur generated outstanding profits. Today, Arsenal is listed by Forbes magazine as the third most profitable football club in the world- Manchester United being number one and Real Madrid as number two. Arsenal's accolades extend beyond mere finances. The club won 13 titles, 10 FA Cups, two League Cups, 12 Community Shields and one European Winners' Cup.
