Get To Know: Liverpool

Liverpool F.C. is arguably the most successful football club in England. They hold 18 titles- one more than Manchester United- which is more than any other team in English football history. But what has become the most successful club in England was started as a substitute team. In 1891, John Houlding decided to raise the rent of Anfield Stadium, Everton's pitch for the past seven years. Rather than meeting Houlding's demands, Everton packed up and moved to their own stadium, Goodison Park. The move left Houlding with an empty stadium and a rising debt so he started his own club the following year to fill the void. Initially, he wanted the new team to be called Ever t on F.C. and Athletic Grounds, Ltd but the name was rejected by The Football Association due to the similarity to the name Everton F.C. Houlding then decided on Liverpool F.C., later to become the greatest club in league history. Liverpool came out swinging. The club won the Lancashire Cup in their first season and were then promoted to the Second Division where they would go on to win the Second Division Cup the following season. The victory earned them a spot in the First Division and in just two seasons, Houlding's gang of replacements were First Division contenders. Liverpool would go on to win the Football League Championship a few years later and from there, begin their march toward record title wins. Aside from the 18 Le a gue titles, Liverpool won seven FA and League Cups, 15 Community Shields, five UEFA Champions League Cups, three UEFA Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, one UEFA Winners' Cup and three Intercontinental Cups.
