Get To Know: Manchester United

No other team in the EPL is as widely known as Manchester United. It's the first name to pop into the minds of most people around the world when asked to name one English football club. In fact, the club has a reported 330 million fans worldwide (nearly 5% of the global population). But what's the story behind England's Red Devils? Manchester United first began as the Newton Heath L&YR F.C. in 1878 as the company team for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot. After running into bankruptcy during the late 1800s, the team was revived when managing director for Manchester Breweries was persuaded to invest in the club for a chairman position. With the new financing, came a new name. Several names including " Man chester" were tossed around until Louis Rocca suggested the name "Manchester United". On April 26, 1902 Manchester United was officially born. Since then, Man U has become one of the most successful clubs in football history, winning 17 League titles, 11 FA Cups, two League Cups, 17 Community Shields, three UEFA Champions League Cups, one UEFA Winners' Cup, one European Super Cup and one Intercontinental Cup. The club has also acquired three Doubles, two European Doubles and one Treble in its 106 year history. Man U has been under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson since 1986 and has accomplished most of their success in the past 22 years making them the fiercest and most dominating club in modern EPL history.
