Get To Know: Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur F.C. are as successful as their Premier League counterparts, known as the “Big Four”, but they have also achieved some amazing feats on their own, including a considerable amount of international fame. Among their many achievements, the Spurs were the first squad to win the League and FA Cup Double in the 20th century and they were also the first British squad to win the European Winners' Cup. Both of those achievements were made during the Spurs' glory years in the 1960s. Tottenham began in 1882 when a group of school boys met at a local bible class and decided to start a football club. The boys called themselves the Hotspur Football Club, perhaps after a Shakespeare character, but they later changed the name to Tottenham Hotspur Football and Athletic Club to avoid confusion with a similar named team in London called London Hotspur. THFAC did not charge spectators for the fist several years until they relocated in 1888 to Northumberland Park where they began to charge an admission price. Tottenham moved to its current High Road- also known as White Hart Lane- location in 1899. When the First Division decided to expand the amount of players in the teams from 20 to 22 in 1919, the decision to promote 6th place Arsenal over the higher ranking Tottenham further ignited the small burning rivalry between the two teams into a full-blown inferno of disgust. To date, Tottenham Hotspur has won two First Division titles, eight FA Cups, four League Cups, seve n Commun i ty Shields, two UEFA Cups and one UEFA CUP Winners' Cup.
